Editor/Sr. Writer (Contract and Temp to Hire)

The Editor serves a critical role on the Editorial team, leading the development of high-engagement content, serving as the go-to team writer, and supporting the editing and project management duties of the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor will research and pitch engaging topics for development, whether in feature form and/or on multimedia platforms, with the goal of growing audience engagement. They will work with columnist and contributor content through copy editing and content editing duties, plus posting original content to the site. The Editor will take ownership of projects assigned honing end-to-end project management and contributing to process improvement. 

This position is remote.

Distribution of Focus: 

  • Original content creation (50%): Takes lead on high-engagement content for the site – articles, videos, social media posts, etc. 

  • Original content editing (20%): Conducts copy editing and/or content editing on contributor original content.  

  • Project management (15%): Leads misc. projects; assists with eBook content; manages Upwork contracts. 

  • Original content posting (5%): Posts columnist/contributor articles. 

  • News/misc. (10%): Serves as secondary news backup as needed; provides AE news feedback where needed; handles misc. duties as assigned. 

Original content creation (50%) 

  • Contribute original feature articles and human-interest profiles, and serves as lead feature writer of profiles, quizzes and high-engagement content.  

  • Focus on new content types – short videos, social media clips, podcast soundbites. Multimedia brainstorming in focus.  

  • Lead development, testing and execution of new content features and formats.  

  • Keyword research and creation of SEO-focused content with guidance from audience development manager and/or EIC.  

  • Coordinate with EIC to map out original content for the month to cover the following areas, resulting in 6-12 pieces of published content across sites per month:  

News: Original content tied to current events. Sample formats:   

  • Explainers  

  • Trending topic analysis  

  • Quick Take  

  • Engagement survey/reader poll  

  • Short video  

Industry: Content tied to special coverage, in-depth features, custom content: Sample formats:  

  • Human interest profiles  

  • Multi-source features  

  • Original features for Brand Studio (e.g., RM or custom article for DE)  

  • Multimedia engagement  

High engagement: Content with an entertainment bent, aimed at high traffic or social performance. Sample formats:  

  • Quiz  

  • Listicle   

  • UGC  

  • Social media  

SEO: Content targeted at high-value keywords. Various formats. 

Original content editing (20%):  

  • Conducts copy editing and/or content editing on contributor original content in support of EiC editing needs.  

  • Manages multiple columnists, coordinates content. 

  • Develops/sources content when EiC OOO. 

Project management (15%):  

  • Leads misc. projects (EOY, First Responders Day, trade show coverage, anniversaries), starting with conceptualization (KOCs, idea generation, graphics) and providing overall support of EiC’s efforts through editing, posting, other duties as needed. Some projects will be end-to-end management; others managing a specific part of the project in support of EiC’s vision. 

  • Packages eBook content. 

  • Manages Upwork contracts where needed. 

  • Works on evergreen content management. 

Original content posting and quality control (5%):  

  • Posts columnist/contributor articles. 

  • Adds accurate product category and topic associations; performs routine QA review of editors’ topic and PC associations, looking for trends and areas of improvement. 

  • Adds relevant featured images. 

  • Handles social promotion x2. 

Misc. (10%):  

  • Serves as news backup and performs periodic review of news to assess. 

  • Seeks Analytics information relevant to OC work.
